Why didn't you like the portray of Thor in TDW? i think chris did an amazing job.
It’s not about Chris, he really did a marvelous job, it’s about how Thor was written.
It’s been a while since I’ve wanted to talk about this so beware, long post ahead (oh, I love this)
I’m just going to list the things that bothered me, but let’s make clear that I love Thor anyway.
1- Thor and Jane. At this point pretty much everyone knows this, but their relationship makes no sense. In the first movie, they were friends and they helped each other, they found each other fascinating. Yes, they shared a kiss but that’s it. In Thor 2? it’s a damn “Romeo & Juliet” love story that comes out of nowhere. Jane and Thor are good characters separately, but when they are together it’s just plain bad, it’s hard to empathize with their love because it has never been there in the first place.
2 -Thor spies Jane. I am going to repeat this: Thor spies Jane. I imagine the writers wanted to show how much Thor misses Jane but excuse me? Comic Thor would never do that he is not a stalker. Also, Jane was supposed to be depressed so ??? “do you see her, Heimdall? what is she doing?”, “she is crying and thinking ‘bout you, lol” I mean. and he could have visited her at any moment, it only took him 1 minute to get there so the “I was too busy even tho I spied you every night” excuse doesn’t work. what the hell.
3 -Frigga. *Ahem* this is a little bit more tricky so I hope nobody misunderstands me. Let me explain: Thor loves Frigga and that’s a fact. He didn’t cry and he didn’t look as sad as, let’s say, Sif, Heimdall, Loki or Odin. So, why is that? I think the writers wanted to show that Thor was strong, that Thor couldn’t break since he was the only pillar left that supported Asgard. “he [Odin] is blinded, Heimdall, by hatred and by grief”, “as are we all”, “well, I see clearly enough” // “did she suffer?”, “I did not come here to share our grief” that may sound noble and brave, but doesn’t work on screen. Even if Thor is strong, I think it was a bad decision to don’t let him break on a moment as important as that.
by the way, it’s not Chris’ fault here, they just didn’t let him be. Look at the funeral scene for god’s sake:
here we have Heimdall, Sif, Odin and Loki
and now here is Thor:
notice a difference? why the fuck doesn’t Thor have a closeup? I don’t know whose fault it is but they fucked up. It may sound stupid but these things are so damn important… I can’t believe Thor doesn’t have a closeup but Heimdall does (btw, Heimdall’s closeup and dolly-in was beautiful)
I understand Jane not having a closeup but Thor is Frigga’s son so???
um… let’s proceed.
4 -tHE SCENE IN THE CAVE AFTER LOKI DIES IS SO WRONG I DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START.
5 -The ending. Thor ends with Jane (??? ?? ok?), forgets all his responsibilities and leaves his father alone to rule when he is already too old and visibly weak (and he can’t rule I mean he almost put in danger all Asgard)
I summed it up a little but these are some of the reasons why It was really hard for me to fully emphasize with Thor2!Thor. He was still great in a lot of scenes but overall I don’t really know what to think… maybe I expected too much lol.
"forgets all his responsibilities and leaves his father alone to rule when he is already too old and visibly weak"
T H I S. This so goddamn much. This also flies in the face of point #3 with the final product/final film pushing so hard for Thor’s stoic strength (why these movies tend to cut out anything approaching emotional depth EVERY TIME is fucking beyond me); the whole point in his altercation with Odin/treason #2 is that Odin is the only one who cannot see (obviously) how blinded by anger, hatred, and revenge he is, at the risk of everyone in Asgard, who he even says he WOULD WILLINGLY sacrifice if it came down to it, re: Malekith. We’ve spent two films now on Thor’s growth, the downplay of his hubris, and his capabilities as a leader and having to face that reality.
As it stands now, the way that the final film pans out, all of Thor’s development regarding his responsibility to anyone but himself is basically moot. He defies his father because Odin cannot see the bigger picture, and yet in the end, we’re given a Thor who is basically following in these exact footsteps, despite all signs pointing to him doing anything but.
I want to know what the original script looked like before it was handed to Joss Whedon and given edits to make it fit in line with the future envisioning of Avengers 2, because I have a feeling that script would have addressed at least SOME of these points (maybe not all of them, but I think a lessened focus on Thor/Jane may have helped them both out).
THIS is why so many of us have such a hard time accepting the ending as anything but a rush-job heavily altered to fit into a very strict and suffocating Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase Two/Avengers 2 lens at the absolute expense of what could have been a really deep, emotionally resonating film (rather than simply a good/entertaining one).
- Kevin Feige was interviewed in Total Film two weeks ago and said they were considering it as an offhand comment, aka they know about some people wanting it yada yada, meaning: nil.
- I asked the Marvel media person on twitter if it was true, he said that it was article talking, and we shouldn’t take this a fact at all.
- If it’s potentially in development, that’s at least 3 or 4 years if not more until it reaches us and pretty much 2 years before an announcement.
- And even IF they are doing this and decided to announce it, say, at Comic Con, even this year, that’s awesome but, then, that’s a humongous secret because so far there is nothing leading toward this especially when it was been confirmed Phase 3 is more about Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and potentially Black Panther but EVEN THAT ISN’T CONFIRMED. Believe me, when this kind of things start moving into possibility territory, the noise in the movie industry is BIGGER.
- the recent articles posting about it this week have re-used the SAME QUOTE from Total Film and there is no news around it.
So basically, the fight to get this movie isn’t over, but it’s not about when it will happen, it’s still about the IF.
I would love to be proven wrong and be told that they’ve kept it a secret all this time and surprise, bitch, it’s happening. But as a FACTUAL thing, it’s not at all a confirmed news. So voila, an update :D
